Aesthetic statement

Order This course has a strong emphasis on the value of writing. On November 4th, a paper outline with an annotated bibliography is due, and on November 25th, the paper itself is due. Your primary bibliography should be included in the outline (one page, typed) on your subject, at least three books or journal articles, and you should justify your selection of these sources. It must be supported by credible research, some of which can be shown in your bibliography. The goal of the outline is to aid you, provide some direction, and ensure that you are on the right road. The subject is essential, manageable, and can significantly advance your knowledge and comprehension of the subject. The subject must be relevant to the lessons taught, must be covered in the course, or must have the instructor’s approval.

The essay should demonstrate your study of a subject that goes beyond what is covered in the lectures or the textbook. A paper should involve in-depth analysis, discussion, and justification of a piece of art, a collection of connected pieces of art, an artist, a subject, or both. There shouldn’t be a mishmash of sources without any of your synthesis or analysis. The instructor’s constructive criticism is meant to help you improve your work and writing abilities, not to belittle you personally. Late paper won’t be accepted. The top papers will be suggested to take part in the Asian Studies Programs’ Lee Scholarship competition.

Never write or put markings on library books if you utilize their resources.

Plagiarism is not permitted in any form, including in ideas, complete articles, passages, and sentences. It will cause you to fail the course.

The paper’s format is:

Papers based on web material are not accepted, with the exception of scholarly journals in electronic format.

Paper that was purchased cannot be used.

Include the page number.

Double space, font size 12, please.

Illustrations: Make copies of the artwork you describe in your paper and, if necessary, copies of any other pictures you mention in the paper. Attach these copies as “fig. 1,” “fig. 2,” etc. at the end of your essay. Don’t remove illustrations from books, especially library books. You can use the Visual Resource Library (https://www.mdid.art.msu.edu) or go to HYPERLINK “https://www.artstor.org/” www.artstor.org/, to which the MSU Library has a subscription, for illustrations and images.

Identify the image’s sources.

Use the proper structure and include footnotes when citing sources.

Give a bibliography and follow the right format.

Avoid using a cover.

Give your essay a title.

You could choose to start your paper with an opening paragraph that introduces your topic, your thesis, and the format of your work.

You might want to write a summary at the end.

Paper’s subject matter:

Your essay should be a research article that goes in-depth on a specific piece of art, an artist, a topic, etc.; it shouldn’t be a general overview of something like “Indian art” or “Song dynasty landscape painting.”

A paper shouldn’t be a summary of the lecture notes or the textbook.

Consult at least three books or journal articles on your subject; give careful attention to current research, especially that published in scholarly journals and university presses. The effectiveness of your bibliography has a significant impact on the paper’s outcome.

For instance, if you want to write a paper about an artist, you can do a name search.

Avoid writing on subjects unrelated to the course, such African art.

Your thesis (your idea, your argument, your perspective, or your own understanding of a work of art) should serve as the focal point of your paper.

You shouldn’t use a simplistic or ambiguous thesis statement or argument, such as “Buddhist art is wonderful” or “Chinese architecture has influenced Japanese architecture.”

Your thesis shouldn’t be an aesthetic declaration (such as “the image of Padmapani in Ajanta Cave One is the most beautiful work”) but rather should be of a scholarly character, such as “the image of Padmapani in Ajanta Cave One represents a new trend in Buddhist art.”

Write an introduction to an artwork (its date, the artist, its historical context, its style, its function, etc.) or a topic, or an artist, if you do not already have a thesis or notion about it. However, unless you show in your paper that you are a thorough, diligent, and serious researcher, and present your materials correctly, this type of paper will not obtain an A.
