In this session, you will write a research report on a subject that is important and personally meaningful to you. The first step is to generate ideas for themes and potential approaches to one or more issues.
To emphasize, one requirement—and a crucial element of a successful paper—is that the subject you study must have a meaningful personal connection.
A successful paper must also investigate a subject you are interested in learning more about.
Your paper will undoubtedly encounter problems if you are not willing to consider new perspectives on your subject or if you believe you already know enough to write as an authority on the subject without looking into alternative viewpoints.
Another essential to writing an effective paper is to avoid becoming too emotionally attached to the subject to the point where you lose perspective.
[Read that last sentence again and give it some thought when you select the subject for your paper and start your research.]
RELATIONS TO INFORMATION
In your paper, you will cite information from at least seven different sources. A minimum of one scholarly journal article, one book, one website, one non-scholarly periodical article (newspaper or magazine), and one personal interview (conducted in person, by phone, mail, or email) must be included in the seven sources.
Utilize a minimum of one academic journal article. Depending on the subject, older journal articles are frequently perfectly fine. Just inquire if you’re thinking about using an older piece and are unsure about its applicability. Print or digital versions of academic journal articles are both possible. If you are unsure whether a source is scholarly, feel free to contact me, a librarian, or a writing center adviser.
Please use at least one book. Ebooks are considered books. And books on paper do too. Likewise, book chapters (No, you don’t have to find a whole book on your subject.) You could locate a book on water sports that includes a chapter on kayak fishing in the Keys. You may include the source as your book if you are writing about saltwater sportfishing and discover relevant information in the book chapter about kayak fishing in the Keys.
Use at least one online resource that was located using the Web (for example, a Google search). Although it need not be academic, this source must be reliable. Cite Wikipedia, not Wikipedia. Use only sources whose publisher or sponsor may be identified.
Use a newspaper or magazine article, or at least one non-scholarly periodical piece. You have the option of using a printed copy or an online article from a magazine or newspaper website. This article must be out of date.
You must conduct at least one in-person interview with a subject-matter expert. This individual’s subject matter expertise may be proven by their formal education, their professional experience, or a mix of both. This interview can be conducted in person, over the phone, or by email.
You must cite two more sources in your paper in addition to the five mentioned above. You can use any kind of source for these two citations, such as a book, DVD, pamphlet, radio broadcast, or DVD.

Your work will cite a minimum of seven sources in total, at least one of which must be scholarly.

LENGTH
1000–2500 words will make up your study paper. Aim for 3–6 pages maximum. (Note: There are around 1650 words on this homework page.) Before the Works Cited page, type the word count at the conclusion of your document. The word count will only take into account the text of your essay, not its heading, title, or Works Cited page.
Regardless of the quality of your paper’s substance or the elegance of its style, you may not fall short of the required word count; in that case, you will receive a failing score. If you use more words than are allowed, your essay should demonstrate that it was well-written and edited. To put it another way, you’d best require the extra room to finish your completely amazing paper.
You must include a Works Cited page with the 1000–2500 words that are necessary. The word count does not include your Works Cited page.
There is no need for a title page. In the upper left corner, there is a staple holding the pages together. Use a 12-point serif font with 1″ margins and other MLA formatting guidelines to format your paper. Examples of such fonts include Times New Roman and Cambria. Please take note of the submission instructions below.
Cite any information and quotes you include in your paper that came from other sources. You should keep cited passages to three lines or less, with very few exceptions. Why? Except for a few instances, this essay is too brief to use block quotations.
In addition to your title, you may employ headings, but do so carefully. Headings do not make up for a lack of good organization. You are allowed to utilize images, such as pictures, graphs, cartoons, and the like. These items won’t be included in your overall word count of 1000–2500.
