A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier is a book written in reality an author called Beah Ishmael. The book was first published in the year 2007 by Beah Ishmael to give firsthand account on civil war which rocked Sierra Leone over the decades.  The author who happened to have been involved in war wrote the book to reveal the plight of children soldiers in the conflicts being felt worldwide. The main character in the book is Ishmael Beah who was recruited to Sierra Leone civil war to fight for the government armed forces, his parents and brothers had been killed before in the civil war. He was left with one brother and latter recruited to join the fight before being rescued by UNICEF personnel in the process fighting (William, 2007). The author wrote the book as he recounted his days as a child soldier and how the Sierra Leone army forces recruited them to defend their village in his home country. It is after these sad moments that the author flees to United States of America with UNICEF nurse, Esther.
