In the textbook for this class interpretation of data collected in a qualitative study is when “The researcher places the findings in a large context and may link different themes or factors in the finding to each other”.  (Groves, Gray, & Burns, 2015) The researcher is breaking down the subject’s thoughts or feelings into groups that can be assigned a code or number based on a narrowed statement.  This was a little difficult for me to understand until I realized that as nurses we collect qualitative data with every patient encounter.  One good example is the 1-10 pain scale.  The Wong-Baker Faces scale even more so.  For non-English speaking, pediatric or cognitively impaired patients the Wong-Baker Faces scale breaks pain down into a picture connected with a number  (Wong-Baker Faces, 2016).  The nurse can then medicate for the patient’s personal experience of pain.  After connecting the pain scale to qualitative study, I could also connect many other tools I use on daily basis.  Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) or Withdrawal Assessment of Alcohol Scale (CIWA) are other examples.
