Demonstrating the ability to gather information ethically and legally.

We are going to create a subject guide that specializes in the specific area of your field of study. This will benefit you as you go through school. If you have an undeclared major, choose a subject area which you are interested in studying. Objective of this assignment pertains to all the course objectives you have learned in this course. Just in case you forgot them, they are as follows: CO-1: Apply the research process to formulate and employ efficient and effective strategies for acquiring information in various formats. • Choose, define, and limit a research problem • Identify appropriate types of resources to answer the information need • Locate print, electronic, and multimedia resources CO-2: Identify and critically assess appropriate materials for information needs. • Articulate and apply evaluative criteria to information and its sources • Evaluate the usefulness of retrieved information to the research problem CO-3: Demonstrate the ability to use gathered information ethically and legally. • Use information sources to produce an information product (blog, research paper, bibliography, media project, etc.) • Evaluate the usefulness of retrieved information to the research problem • Understand and apply copyright law in basic form • Access information and/or media via legal means CO-4: Articulate an understanding of information literacy as a concept and its application to lifelong learning. • Articulate an understanding that information literacy is a composite set of abilities that allows an information user to competently navigate the information ecosystem to acquire and use information. OVERVIEW: Your subject guide will focus on a SPECIFIC CONTENT AREA within your field (CO-1: Choose, define, and limit research). Specific content does not mean broad topics, such as global warming, macroeconomics, nursing, etc. You will then choose appropriate resources to add to your subject guide (CO-1: Identify appropriate types of resources and locate resources). you will explain the types of resources you will gather in the step 3 section. Your research guide will explain to researcher how to access materials and why the resources you chose is important (CO-2: Identify and critically assess appropriate materials for information need: Articulate and evaluate information sources). You will choose an example of an article, webpage, or other format from 4 selected resources (which I explain in Steps 3 & 4) (CO-3: Demonstrate the ability to gather information ethically and legally: Use information source to produce a product and access information via legal means). Finally, you will write a reflection paper about your information literacy as it relates to your subject guide. This will be explained in Step 5 (CO-4: Articulate an understanding of information literacy as a concept and its application to lifelong learning). Step 1: Choose Specific Content Area. This needs to be displayed or explained in some manner within your project. This falls under Chapter 1 (Identify) Skills needed: Identify a lack of knowledge, recognize and define an information need and identify a search topic, identify available search tools, identify which types of information best meet the need, identify different formats. Step 2: Choose How to Present. Although this is not mandatory, if you choose something that is not in an online format, you will not be eligible for the maximum points. Something like a simple word document will only be eligible for 65% of the presentation points. Notice, presentation points, not total project points. You can still be eligible for maximum points in all the other grading categories. Also, you need to be able to access your online product. So, if you set up a website, wiki, or blog, you may have to share it through a link or password in order for me to view it. This falls under Chapter 7 (Present) Skills needed: Communicate effectively in an appropriate outlet. Step 3: PART 1: Find the following types of resources Table 1 Resources Needed table 1 Dictionary / Encyclopedia Source 1 CSU Newspaper Database 1 Professional Organization Website 1 Professional Blog 1 Place to find CSU Book 1 Place to Interlibrary Loan a Book 1 Video Source 1 Dissertation Source 2 CSU Databases 1 Statistical Database 1 Special Resource Bonus – 1 More Specialized Resource of your choice A specialized resource could be any resource that has some special quality that is unique to your content area, for example Journal of Comets, Database that has only Clinical Trials, Online 3-Dimensional Cadaver, Drug Dosing Calculator, Tutorial, etc. Remember, this resource is considered authoritative and has been vetted by people in the profession (again, remember, in class, we talked about evaluating information). This resource should prove useful to a researcher. This falls under Chapter 2 (Scope) Skills needed: Identify which types of information best meet the need, identify available search tools, use new tools as they become available.
