In their 2010 study, Sears and Homwvall intended to determine the relationship between a supervisor and subordinate’s emotional intelligence (EI) levels and leader-member exchange (LMX). They proposed that the development of LMX is significantly influenced by the degree of EI similarity between a supervisor and a subordinate. According to the authors, subordinates in high LMX relationships benefit from a variety of intangible resources, including more support, consideration, and feedback. They also acknowledged that empirical research has demonstrated that there is a higher possibility of beneficial outcomes, such as work satisfaction, empowerment, improved performance, and innovation, when employees feel higher levels of LMX.

Describe how you view the article’s research as valuable.

Managers can benefit from the findings in this article in a number of ways. The authors came to the conclusion that LMX was most effective in partnerships when both the leader and subordinate had high EI based on survey data. It’s interesting to note that even when a supervisor and subordinate both had lower EI scores, the subordinate still thought highly of the LMX quality. The study suggests that LMX is influenced by leader and follower EI working together. Another implication is the importance of teaching EI skills to followers as well as leaders. Thirdly, EI has a significant impact on how leader-follower working relationships evolve inside an organization. The study suggests that it is possible for a leader and follower to interact more successfully if their levels of emotional intelligence (EI) are similar.

Leader-member interchange is the research’s dependent variable (Y). Emotional intelligence (X) is an independent variable. The goal of the study was to ascertain how emotional intelligence affects how LMX quality is perceived.

How could the offered research models be incorrect?

The fact that just 37 dyads were polled raises certain issues with the study. Additionally, every study participant came from the same company and sector (public sector). Conscientiousness and core self-evaluations were the two personality control variables that were included in the study; however, the use of additional personality control variables that are closely related to EI could help distinguish between EI influencing how well LMX is perceived and a personality trait that is closely related to EI being the influencing factor on LMX.
