Word counts

When writing to a specific word count is one of the assessment criteria for a piece of coursework, the word count should be accurately mentioned on the front sheet. In such cases, marks may be given or not given based on the fulfillment of this requirement.

Only the text counts toward the word count for coursework, written assignments, projects, reports, and dissertations. Appendices, footnotes, endnotes, bibliographies, graphs, charts, diagrams, tables, and their labels are not counted against the word count requirement for courses, written assignments, projects, reports, and dissertations.

If a piece of coursework otherwise does not adhere to the desired word count, there will be no grade reduction or other penalty. However, it’s vital to keep in mind that failing to supply enough material, generating material that is unfocused, or including irrelevant material will likely result in a lower mark due to the work’s lack of academic worth.

Academic deadlines

You should submit your work for assessment to the relevant Learning and Teaching Service Hub. Before your first deadline, please make sure you are aware of the submission box’s precise placement. A late-night drop box will be provided in the Library during semesters for hard-copy submissions up until midnight, Monday through Thursday.

On the given day, all coursework must be turned in by 3:00 PM. A late submission fee will be assessed if your submission is not received by the deadline without a valid extension.

Work submitted after the deadline must be dropped off at the relevant Hub’s front desk during business hours (8 am to 6 pm, Monday through Friday). For any such submission, students will receive a date/time receipt.

Please keep in mind that the deadline, rather than being a target, indicates the final opportunity for submitting a piece of work. Planning ahead and submitting your work far before the due date is encouraged. This will make it more likely that any last-minute delays won’t cause a submission to be late.

A request for an extension to a deadline for submitting work for evaluation may be made in extraordinary cases.Requests for coursework extensions must be made on a university extension request form and delivered with the necessary supporting documentation to the relevant Learning and Teaching Service Hub prior to the deadline.

Requests for extensions may be made for the following reasons:

medical (requires a note from a doctor)
Serious personal problems (with supporting documentation)

For the following, extension requests won’t be taken into consideration:

time management issues
IT issues (unless evidence can be presented by an IT professional) Transportation or parking delays
Health-related or personal circumstances without supporting documentation

Plan your work such that slight delays won’t hinder on-time submission. You should always make regular backup copies of any schoolwork that is in process.

 

Work turned in after the deadline should be accompanied by a completed University Extension Request Form if extenuating circumstances prohibited you from requesting an extension before the deadline. Acceptable extenuating circumstances will be taken into account, and in such cases, fines for late submission won’t be applied.

 

When sufficient extenuating circumstances exist and an extension request is made before the deadline, the responsible Learning and Teaching Service Manager will take it into consideration. All additional requests will be taken into consideration by the relevant academic staff member at the school.

The following consequences will take effect if you submit coursework after the specified due date without getting permission to extend it:
