global shortage of nurses

we will be exploring the issue of a nursing shortage.  Page 142 in the OCR refers to the current Nursing Shortage and provides a brief synopsis of the issue and possible causes.   Your assignment is to take this knowledge one step further.  Find a reliable article using the College library website or an internet site (.org, .edu, .gov) that discusses the causes, effects, and/or expectations for the nursing shortage.  Then, provide us with a 200 word summary of the information that you uncover. You cannot repeat an article that has already been presented, so the earlier you submit your work, the easier it will be to complete the assignment. At the end of the week we should have a very comprehensive understanding of the issue! Be sure to provide the appropriate reference in APA format.  Requirement:  One original post (200 word minimum)

Please do the reply post for the following 2 persons.

Nursing Shortages

Work Environment – Due to the high pace of emergency rooms and overall workload, the roles and responsibilities have changed, causing some nurses to feel uncomfortable and stressed.  For example, if a nurse is working a 14 hour shift, during that time, they may be responsible for not only handling administrative duties, but taking vitals, and cleaning of the patient.  Some nurses may handle more than a section of patients (especially if theyre understaffed).  In an effort to improve those conditions, some hospitals are redesigning nursing workstations, increasing automation and/or implementing electronic medical records, making it easier to organize and track patient information.  In addition, hiring of temporary or per-diem nurses can ease the workload of the staff.  Another way to combat these shortages is a competitive salary that recruits and retains nurses in a high-demand environment; with wage increases, this gives new/experienced nurses the competitive edge in promotion and overall job satisfaction.  Hospitals also began using flexible schedules, which allow nurses to have a balance, between work and home (healthaffairs.org).

Education – Most nurses dont have the training or experience to carry on their profession, thus causing the shortage.  What hospitals are implementing are “growing their own” nurses by:  tuition reimbursement, flexible hours for current staff to obtain their nursing degrees, and operating their nursing schools (healthaffairs.org).  An example is University Medical and Dentistry of New Jersey, which operates, not only as a trauma center, but a teaching school for their staff.  Also, hospitals are redesigning their orientation periods to give new nurses an opportunity to hone their skills.  For example, new nurses during their orientation (which in some hospitals take up to 20 weeks) – will be excluded from regular hospital staffing for rotation; this will help nurses to find the best fit for them, depending on skill.  Also, hospitals have focused on partnerships with nursing schools, serving as a location for clinical rotations and offering advanced education/certification.

With these acknowledgments and strategies, most hospitals have been responsive in ensuring that the shortages dont increase, the Magnet Recognition Program engages hospitals with nursing staffing strategies that are linked to quality improvement.

The global shortage of nurses have tremendously effected the healthcare system throughout the world. There are many factors that cause nurses shortage around the globe. Advanced Practice Nurses who are highly qualified to teach in the nursing setting have declined over the years. The schools become understaff with faculty, this puts a limitation on nursing students enrollment at such critical time of nurses in demand. Over 75,000 qualified applicants to nursing programs in the United States alone are turned away each year because of a lack of nurse faculty, clinical sites, and inadequate education budgets (American Association of Colleges of Nursing [AACN], 2010.

Nurse retirement is another factor that has an impact on the health system. Many nurses has been in the health industry for years and now ready to retire. This is leaving a lot of vacancies in hospitals that need to be filled with educated nurses. It sets a high patient to nurse ratio environment, which can lead to nurse burnout . Nurses pick up a lot of work hours to help with shortage on the job, with this heavyload of duties it leave nurses exsausted. This is not good for a hospital setting, the patients need all the quality care from the nurses on the unit.

Nurses migrating from home are on the rise, many are leaving to go work internationally for various reasons. Some go for better job offers, personal reasons and better resources. Global nurse faculty migration is defined as nurse educators or researchers leaving their country of origin to work in a different destination. (Nardi & Gyurko, 2013)

In conclusion,With in hope the nursing can collaborate on coming together finding better solutions on ending the shortage. As the population is growing more and people are living longer we need nurses to take care of lives.
