Care of Diverse Populations
Instructions: Answer the questions located in sections A and B. The total length of the exercise (including questions and answers) should be 2-3 pages (double spaced, 11 point font, 1 inch margins). Question text and citations are not counted towards the length.
- Identify a health disparity of interest. Conduct a brief literature review to identify the scope of the health disparity and the ways in which the disparity is socially determined and currently measured. Answer the following questions. Include citations as appropriate.
- What is the health disparity?
- Why is it important to reduce the health disparity?
- What is/are the main factors contributing to the health disparity?
- Identify an agency, strategy, or policy (local, state, national, or global level) that is working to reduce the health disparity either directly or indirectly. Research the agency/program and answer the following questions. Include citations as appropriate.
- What is the agency/strategy/policy?
- What are the overall goals of the agency/strategy/policy?
- How do they endeavor to achieve these goals (i.e. how does the program work/run; how is the program funded, who do they serve, how many people do they reach; what are eligibility criteria, how do they advertise/recruit/distribute services)?
- How do they measure program success?
- What are some of the successes to date? If none yet, when do they expect to see results?
- What are some factors hindering their ability to achieve their goals?
- What aims do they have for the future?
