Questions:
1) How does the œLife of Siddhartha Gotama explain Buddhist ideas concerning the
origin of human suffering and the solution to ending suffering? How is this
solution to ending suffering different than that proposed by Hesiod in Works and
Days?
2) In what ways does the Book of Job answer the question of theodicy, and how are
Jobs answers different than, or similar to, the answers present in Exodus or
Genesis? Your answer should consider the multiple theodicies present in the texts
and why the question of theodicy is so important in the Abrahamic traditions.
3) How can Eliades categories of the sacred and the profane be used to explain sacred
persons in the assigned portions of the New Testament Gospels and the œLife of
Siddhartha Gotama? Your response must use specific passages from the texts.
4) What does Christian Wiman in My Bright Abyss see as the most significant
challenges for a œmodern believer in general, a Christian in particular, and
himself especially? How does he resolve those challenges in his book? Your
response should consider the content, style, and word choice of Wimans
œmeditations.
