May people rely on social media for their knowledge of the world, but since knowledge requires that beliefs be true, we can ask whether beliefs because get from social media are true. In today’s world, this is a relevant question to ask since it is hard not to hear someone say, “It must be true I saw it on Facebook (or a webpage or Twitter or some other similar source)?
To answer this question it is necessary to first ask what is meant by a truth. While many people think there is an obvious response, it is still an open question. Once we know what truth supposedly is, it is necessary to present an argument to support this view. Given a specific theory of truth, one can then determine whether social media can be said to provide truth. There are four steps that you will need to address in your paper.
Specifically, you will need to cover the following points in your paper.
- Explain the philosophical problem of truth – why is it an issue
- Present and explain the theory of truth you think best describes truth is – correspondence theory or coherence theory
- Present one of the arguments provided in the material that supports the theory of truth you have explained
- Apply the theory of truth presented and develop an argument from that perspective on whether social media can be considered truth.
