Assignment 2: Discussion—Writing Strategies in Action

This assignment will require you to apply all of the strategies you have covered thus far. This is your chance to put all you have learned into action!

In the chapter assigned for this module, “Classification and Division: Explaining Categories and Parts,” review Carolyn Foster Segal’s essay entitled, “The Dog Ate My Flash Drive, and Other Tales of Woe.” Be an active reader by using the Before Reading, While Reading, and After Reading strategies you have explored in this course to analyze the author’s tone in this essay.

Then, respond to the following:

  • What seems to be Segal’s intent in writing this piece?
  • Is her tone hidden or overt?
  • What effect does her tone create? Use specific examples from the text to support your point.

Write your initial response in approximately 200 words. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.
