Guided Response: Review at least two of your peers’ postings and extend their learning and the discussion by asking them to clarify their point of view, provide examples or evidence. From reading your peers’ post share an insight or strategy that you learned from the video or your reading that may cause them to evaluate their thoughts.  Jennifer/chameka

Hello everyone,

  1. What would you identify as an important outcome of building relationships with your students while focusing on a culturally inviting environment that is physically safe, while also providing an engaging and positive learning experience?

I would identify an important outcome of building relationships with students as them having someone who tries to get to know them as a person; what their likes and dislikes are, what interests them, what motivates them. All of these will help motivate students to want to come to school. When you add in a culturally inviting environment where they feel physically safe, this enables students to focus on their learning without other factors, such as race, ethnicity, gender, culture, etc. getting in the way. When students’ differences are no longer a factor because the teacher has already made the effort of taking differences into consideration, then the engaging and positive learning experience can take place.

  1. Considering your personal experience as a student, any professional experiences, and your current and past higher-education based learning, are the Seven Principles of Culturally Responsive Teaching theory realistic or idealistic? Be sure to support your opinion with scholarly citations in APA format both in the body of your post and at its conclusion.

Considering my own experiences with school and how I hope them to be for my children, I think the Seven Principles of Culturally Responsive teaching are realistic. I do believe they are extremely challenging and will take a lot of work, but they are principles that the students and teacher and work on together. I feel like these principles are what make an effective teacher. The content being taught is important but connecting with students is what makes the content stick. In my opinion these principles are no brainers. I really enjoyed Mr. Howards colloquial phrases for each of the principles. The most important phrase to me was, “Respect begins with the teacher” (JCPSEmployee, 2012). I feel like once teachers show the students respect then everything else, all the other principles, will fall into place. Respecting a student for who they are culturally, physically, educationally, etc. will allow all the other six principles to fall into place and create positive, lasting, encouraging relationships with students, that will promote engaging and positive learning experiences.

An important outcome of building relationships with students, while providing a culturally inviting environment and a positive engaging learning experience is the benefits of student learning. Those qualities in a classroom will allow students to show interest in learning and to learn more effectively. According to Engels, Coplin, Leeuwen, Bijttebier, Noortgate, Claes, & Verschueren (2016), “Research has shown that the quality of teacher–student relationships is important for various developmental outcomes. Positive teacher–student relationships are characterized by warm, sensitive and responsive interactions. These relationships contribute to students’ behavioral and academic gains (Hamre and Pianta 2001), prosocial behavior (Birch and Ladd 1998), academic motivation, effort, achievement (Ryan et al. 1994), and engagement (Furrer and Skinner 2003)” (p. 1193).

I believe the Seven Principles of Culturally Responsive Teaching theory to be realistic. I believe the principles are realistic because I have seen them get accomplished in a classroom setting. During my student teaching, I was placed in a kindergarten classroom with a teacher who was “Teacher of the Year”. She practiced all the things listed as the seven principles and it was evident. Herr classroom management, instructional strategies, and relationships with students played a huge role on their classroom environment and academic success. Teachers who believe these principles to be idealistic must put effort towards making it realistic.
