Why is knowing the history of the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct so important?I think that knowing the history is important because you have to know the historical information before coming to a definite understanding of the Code of Ethical Conduct.  The history of the Code of Ethical Conduct highlights and responds to the many ethical dilemmas early childhood educators face in their field of work. Generally, history provides an overview of important information, and answers the questions as to “why, who, when” the Code of Ethical Conduct was developed and written.

In our textbook Ethics and the Early Childhood Educator states that the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct is “….a layout of the aspirations of the early childhood field, makes it clear what professional behaviors are required and prohibited, and offers guidance in addressing some of the ethical dilemmas that frequently occur.”  Most importantly, ethics are required and spelled out in the code.  The text also states that “one of the most important aspects of the Code is its affirmation of what is right.”

Why is knowing how to use the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct so important?Knowing how to use the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct is important, because the Code acts as a compass that helps guide the early childhood educator towards an ethical decision.  An early childhood educator has multiple responsibilities, and must be able to collectively work with different people in all walks of life.  The Code of Ethical Conduct helps identify possible solutions in determining and doing what is “right” and “justifiable” in each different situation.
