The focus of the paper is juvenile offenders ages eighteen and below in Erath County, Texas. I am aiming to see what they were arrested for, how they were treated compared to adults who committed similar crimes and how many of them reoffended?

The focus of the paper is juvenile offenders ages eighteen and below in Erath County, Texas. I am aiming to see what they were arrested for, how they were treated compared to adults who committed similar crimes and how many of them reoffended?  In researching this information, I will also look at what role race, gender, or nationality played in the arrests.

My argument is something to the extent of were juveniles treated better or worse than others because of their age? Did race, gender, or nationality have any impact? My anticipated finding would be that age didn’t make a difference at the time, but race did.

I am interested to see how these records we are working with depict the treatment, well-being and overall image of juveniles.

Firstly, were these juveniles in the late 1800s rehabilitate d?

Secondly, were they let off easy because they were children?

Thirdly, were their punishments just as harsh as adults?

Fourthly, how did race, gender, or nationality fit in this bigger narrative?

Secondly, what race were these children? What were the crimes?

Thirdly, what were the jail conditions?

Fourthly, what happened to them?

Further, did they reoffend again as children or as adults, or not at all? If not, what happened to them?

From the rough data compiled, there are atleast 312 entries for individuals eighteen and under. Of those entries, 184 are listed as “American”, ninety-one as “Negro”, one “Polander, two “Mexican”, and one “Italian” The remainder do not have a listed nationality.

My professor mentioned possibly splitting the paper into decades and comparing them. The records we have are using are 1880-1910.

In addition to what is above atleast 5 more secondary sources need to be use. Up to 5 images/pictures may be in inclusion as well.
Census Records can be access from HeritageQuest, Family Search and other sites. Please be sure to cite everything in the paper!

The excel sheet contains information such as names, ages, what they committed, when, and how long they were jailed. Please use the information as you see fit. As far as reoffenders, look for the same names and attributes, maybe spotlight the ones that reoffend the most.
The 10 page paper in length includes the bibliography, any images used. Please be sure to caption and give the citation for the images.
