Of the four elements that must be proven to determine negligence, do you think that any of them is harder to prove than others? Reviewing the patient R. labs, the hemoglobin was 6.0 and platelet count was over a thousand. I called the physician and reported the abnormal labs, MD was not concerned, nor did I receive and orders for transfusion. As a nurse we all develop instincts when we know something is not right in our, “gut.”. Within two hours of talking with the physician the patient coded. It took three pages for the physician to return the call. Looking back, I could have called a RAPID RESONSE, maybe this maybe could have prevented this incident. I was an inexperienced nurse. I questioned whether this could have had a different outcome if the critical care team and physician this could have assessed the patient. Choose scenario 1, 2, or 3 in the article. Summarize the lesson to be learned, and what you would have done to avoid the error. Scenario—I chose the medication error. High risk medications are medications such as insulin, digoxin and chemotherapy for a reason. Without the proper checks and balances an error can easily happen and this is why another nurse should verify your dose.
