 PART II: ESSAY QUESTION (100 PTS) (The key to an effective essay is four-fold. 1) Clarity and viability of the argument; 2) Adequate support of that argument with evidence; 3) Good organization from beginning to end; 4) Good writing mechanics. When I grade these, I use these four criteria, which means half of your grade here is based on content, half on the actual writing. One key is to have a brief, but very clear introduction that states what this is about first and what your core argument is. Save your actual evidence for the main body of the paper. Essay Question: We ended this course with China, because what the future holds for global media industries will depend largely on future developments within China. China has had the benefit of learning different lessons from very different models in the rest of the world of how governments and media industries act — and interact. At the same time, however, China is different from all these other examples because of how deeply the government is getting involved. In a well-written essay, first explain what China has copied from the various models found in Hollywood, Europe, India, Japan, Hong Kong and South Korea. (Be sure to gives some detail of how exactly China is adapting from each particular model.) In addition, explain how China has not only help developed arguably the most advanced media infrastructure in the world today, but at the same time how it also has attempted to control media on its own terms. (Since China has not yet quite produced the “soft power” created by media emanating in Hollywood, India, Japan, Hong Kong or most recently South Korea, further speculate on what you think still needs to happen for China to achieve this “soft power,” even with its own citizens.)
